Why voiceover?
For every single person answering this question whether they want to voice act, are a hobbyist or is already a seasoned vet, the answer you’ll receive will more than likely be very different. I am no exception.
To me voice over is a safety net. When I was younger, cartoons, videogames and the such all helped me feel better when I was down. Soon I became gaming obsessed, waking up at 9am and playing until 10 PM on weekends (if school wasn’t a thing I’d be doing it during the week too).
Through games I met some of my closest friends and with those friends talked about all the newest games, argued and laughed about which ones were the best. It wasn’t long until I discovered anime. Something that I felt I could truly relate to, back then it wasn’t something that could be proudly talked about too much but my love for it was second to none.
All that being said it wasn’t until I was 17 that I discovered what “voiceover” was. My whole life, all though illogical I had never thought that real human beings were behind spongebob, that a woman could play a boy in Timmy Turner, Jimmy Neutron, Naruto. I quickly realized that all of the people giving life to these characters had the ability to make millions of kids, teens, adults, laugh and smile and all that really mattered was the connection that these people make to the character that they happened to play in stories much larger than themselves. It seemed almost super human to me.
Discovering a creative medium where being the best looking, with the strongest muscle, the nicest smirk and the skin colour to boot DIDN’T MATTER, was absolutely breathtaking. I started on this venture because not only because acting in it of itself is a genuine great time, but because It allows me the ability to make connections to millions of people and they don’t even have to know my name. What I and a lot of people have come to realize is that voiceover has the power to change lives, and after all those years of smashing buttons, watching cutscenes, and watching super saiyans power up, I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that it’s changed mine.
